Billy Joel is stepping away from the spotlight. For now, at least.
The 76-year-old music legend announced on Friday, May 23, that he’s canceling all upcoming tour dates after being diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) – a neurological condition that’s worsened due to recent performances.
Per a statement shared to Instagram, Joel’s doctors have ordered him to halt all live shows while he undergoes treatment and physical therapy.
“This condition has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision and balance,” the statement read. “Under his doctor’s instructions, Billy is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period.”

According to the Cleveland Clinic, NPH occurs when excess cerebrospinal fluid builds up in the brain, causing pressure that can affect walking, balance, memory, and vision. It primarily impacts people over 65 but is “often treatable and sometimes even reversible.”
In the post, Joel expressed gratitude for his medical care and the support he’s received from fans. “He is thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritizing his health,” the statement continued. “He looks forward to the day when he can once again take the stage.”
Joel also shared a personal message to fans:
“I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding.”
This isn’t the first time Joel has pressed pause for health reasons. Back in March, he postponed his 2025 tour due to an undisclosed medical condition requiring surgery and physical therapy. “As much as I regret postponing shows, my health must come first,” he said at the time, adding that he couldn’t wait to return to “sharing the joy of live music with our amazing fans.”
