There’s no doubt that Shrek is one of the best animated franchises of all time and now, confirmation its getting another sequel. Not only that, but a standalone Donkey spin-off is also in the works… and that news is straight from the Donkey’s mouth, Eddie Murphy.
Speaking in a recent interview for his latest film ‘Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F’, he confirmed that a fifth ‘Shrek’ is already well into production and should arrive in cinemas ahead of the franchise’s 25th anniversary in 2026.

“We started doing Shrek 4 or 5 months ago,” he said. “I [have] recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up. Shrek is coming out, and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie.”
Murphy has been the voice of ‘Donkey’ since the first Shrek in 2001, continuing the character for Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek the Third (2007) and Shrek Forever After (2010).
Two spin-off films were made centred around the character ‘Puss in Boots’: 2011’s Puss in Boots and its sequel, 2022’s The Last Wish.
As well as a string of TV specials and video games, a stage musical was also adapted and ran for more than a year (2008-2010) on Broadway.
The franchise has generated over $4 billion at the box office from a budget of over $750 million and is currently the 18th highest grossing film franchise of all time and the second-highest grossing animated franchise (the highest, at $4.6 billion, is Despicable Me).
Expect to see Shrek 5 in Cinemas in 2025.
