Almost 25 years since Ridley Scott’s Oscar-winning Gladiator hit cinemas in 2000, comes the first trailer for its sequel, Gladiator II.
The film picks up two decades later with a grown-up Lucius Verus (Paul Mescal), the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen, reprising her role) and the nephew of evil Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix).
Years after witnessing the death of the revered hero Maximus (Russell Crowe) at the hands of his uncle, Lucius is enslaved and forced to fight as a gladiator after his home is conquered by the young tyrannical Emperors who now lead Rome with an iron fist.
The original movie attracted critical acclaim, bagging 12 nominations at the Oscars and winning five, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Crowe.
The much-anticipated sequel has a star-studded supporting cast including Pedro Pascal who plays Marcus Acacius, a Roman general who trained under Maximus, while Denzel Washington plays Macrinus, a ‘power broker’ who deals in everything from weapons to wine.
Gladiator II is set for release November 22.
