On January 25, 1992, the first Big Day Out kicked off at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion.
(is anyone else struggling to wrap their head around the fact that 1992 was 30 years ago?)
For $40 a ticket, you got to see 21 acts, headlined by Violent Femmes and this relatively new outfit called Nirvana.
Turned out it was the latter that blew everyone away.
The following year, it expanded to include Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth… and only got bigger, year on year.
Over the years, line-ups have included Nirvana, Metallica, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Chemical Brothers, Tool, Blink-182, Muse, Hole, Nine Inch Nails and Red Hot Chili Peppers, while also promoting local Aussie and Kiwi artists such as Regurgitator, Powderfinger, Grinspoon, Silverchair and The Living End.
