Ever since the Elvis impersonators found popularity in the 1950s, every iconic act seems to have its own tribute.
Thing is, based on Clairsy & Lisa’s callers this morning, one thing is clear: tribute bands don’t just exist in Perth – they thrive.
On first thought, their popularity here could be chalked up to geography. I mean, how many touring acts have overlooked our isolated city, or only drop by every second or third time, because the costs were simply too prohibitive? A tribute band is often as close as you’re going to get.
Another point of appeal is the fantasy and nostalgia of it all. You can never see The Beatles, The Sex Pistols or David Bowie; a tribute band is as close as you’re going to get. They’re also a helluva lot easier on your wallet, and for venues to put on.
And while there’ll always be purists (we get it), Ray from Quinns Rocks told Clairsy & Lisa, “If it’s good music and I’m having a good time on the dance floor, as far as I’m concerned, that’s all I need.”
Hard to argue with that.
