Former Savage Garden frontman Darren Hayes made a grand return to the stage with his remarkable appearance on The Masked Singer as the Grim Reaper.
But it wasn’t easy. In fact, Hayes told Clairsy & Lisa it was “almost impossible” to perform in the eerie get-up, but was lucky he could move it head around in it… but not much else.
“That thing was, I don’t know, 12 feet tall,” he said. “I had almost like a gridiron sort of brace on my shoulders and it sat on my chest. I had to have my arms up in the air, which is not ideal for breathing.”
Hayes called the colossal costume his ‘Muppet’ and just prayed he was hitting the right notes.
Thanks to everyone at @maskedsinger_au for the most extraordinary adventure. It was emotional, challenging & humbling. So grateful for the love and the opportunity. This is a private video from a live soundcheck before the audience came in. pic.twitter.com/ZWC7EYRZl1

Aside from the show, Hayes also touched on his decade-long hiatus from the music industry, Peking Duk’s epic reworking of I Want You, and the one Savage Garden song he still finds the hardest to sing (and, incredibly, it’s not Affirmation).
