Rock, Paper, Scissors might seem like a game of pure luck, but apparently there’s a strategy to help tip the scales your way.
Game designer Nick Metzler recently shared his winning formula on TikTok. His secret? Psychology.
According to Metzler, players often reveal their next move when they say ‘rock, paper, scissors’ out loud, the first or last word they say often influences their choice.

Metzler recommends starting with rock. Why? He says most people tend to throw scissors or rocks after saying ‘rock, paper, scissors,’ making rock a safe bet. This gives you a good chance of either tying or winning, especially since many players avoid starting with paper. According to Metzler, ‘most people never start with paper,’ and those who do often lose to rock or scissors.
If you happen to lose, Metzler advises sticking to rock. He says, ‘If I tie, I’ll stay with rock. If I lose to paper, I’ll give them the win, because who starts with paper anyway?’
So, next time you play, try using these tips and see if you can outsmart your opponent… or just take Joey’s approach…
