A koala was spotted casually wandering into an IGA in South Gippsland, surprising both staff and shoppers as it leisurely roamed the aisles.
Store owner Kaelene Shervall told Today that while the local koala population is well-known in the area, this was the first time one had ventured inside her store.
“They have a little roosting area in the trees in the middle of town, and this one decided to waddle over to our door. He was very determined to come in, and we had quite a bit of trouble getting him back out,” she explained.
The koala’s main aim appeared to be getting up high off the ground. After trying to scale the store’s herb stand, Shervall got a platform ladder to help, which the lil’ guy seemed to prefer.
While the koala didn’t cause any damage, Kaelene admitted she was more worried about its safety on the roads leading to the store. Staff gently wheeled the koala out to a safer spot using the ladder.
“We just wanted to get him away from the traffic. He hasn’t returned, and honestly, I hope he doesn’t try again,” she added with a laugh.
