A Perth restaurant has been making headlines after the owner announced a blanket ban on vegans, and Clairsy & Lisa had some thoughts about the whole drama.
But first, some background.
Earlier this week, Chef John Mountain took to social media to say vegans would not be accommodated at his restaurant Fyre in Connolly.
“Sadly all vegans are now banned from Fyre (for mental health reasons),” Mr Mountain posted to Facebook. “We thank you for your understanding. Xx.”
This ban was in response to a customer who had enquired about vegan options, which Mr Mountain told The West he could accommodate with gnocchi and vegetables.
However, by the time her booking rolled around, he had “sadly forgotten” the young woman’s request and in response, the woman complained to the restaurant by direct message.
She stated that, “My only option was the vegetable dish… it was okay but not that filling… and I was shocked to see it was $32,” she wrote, adding, “I think it’s incredibly important nowadays that restaurants can accommodate everyone and to not be able to have actual plant-based meals shows your shortcomings as a chef.”
Mr Mountain said that while part of her complaint was justified, the woman had taken it too far.
“Look, I said I would accommodate her, and I didn’t … but she made the complaint personal.”
Clairsy & Lisa couldn’t help but consider the possibility that the restaurant knew that by placing a ban on vegans, it would attract attention.
