There’s a last-minute appeal for a women’s crisis shelter to remain open.
After tonight, the Safe Night Space in East Perth run by Ruah Community Service will close, leaving dozens of vulnerable women with nowhere to turn.
When Clarisy & Lisa asked Ruah’s executive manager Elsie Blay if there was anywhere these women could go in the CBD area as an alternative, it was met with a deadpan response: “This is it.”
Ms Blay explained that these women didn’t need treatment or a hospital bed, they just needed a safe place.
“We’ve had a 90% increase for the service since this time last year,” she said, adding that after tonight, some of the women are wondering if they’ll survive until Christmas.
